Type of Wax Melt Warmer
Best Wax Melts
Firstly, think about where you are going to use your wax melts, the living room, the bedroom, your office?
Wax melts are fantastic as they are small and easy to transport with you. They have the added bonus of not needing an open flame to heat them. If you opt for an electric wax melt warmer it takes a big part of a fire risk away.
Electric Wax Melt Burners
All you need to do is simply get an electric wax melt burner, some wax melts and pop it into a plug and switch it on.
Electric wax burners come in different wattage which is important to consider when you are making a purchase.
The bigger the room the likelihood of needing a high wattage electric wax melt burner to help the fragrances travel and wrap your room in a beautiful aroma.
Tealight Wax Melt Burners
Tealight Wax melts burners are simply gorgeous. Just grab a burner, some tealights (maximum burn time 4 hour and unscented), matches and your wax melts and fill your room with lovely aromas from the best wax melts.
Obviously with tealight there is an open flame, so caution is needed when using due to the fire risk, so check out our safety guide here.
Tealight wax melt burners tend to burn the wax melts faster than electric. It is important to use tealights that DON’T have with a long burn time, for example 8 hours. This is because you do not want to overheat your wax melt burner and cause the wax to burn too quickly, meaning that you won’t get the best from your wax melts.
Only use 4 hour unscented tealights and always let your wax melt burner cool down for an hour or two before reusing. If you want constant use, then grab another wax melt burner and switch between. This way your wax melt burner won’t experience stress fractures and become unsafe to use.
Your Room Size Matters
Best Wax Melts
Now that you have considered what type of wax melt burners there are on the market, its time to consider where you will be using it the most. Your lifestyle is unique so we all have different requirements, but what we do want is the best wax melts!
Do you have pets which roam around the house and climb things? Do you have young children which love to explore? Do you have a work space that has a lot of paper work? You need to consider the safety aspects of both electric and tealight wax melt burners.
Small Rooms
Small rooms are easier to fill with the beautiful aromas as the molecules don’t have as far to travel.
Both electric and tealight burners are great for getting the best wax melts in small spaces, for the reasons stated above. It is always important that they are used safely.
However, there aren’t always spaces that allow tealight burners due to their fire risk such as student accommodation or work places, which then makes electric wax burners a better option to explore.
Large Rooms
Large room including open plan spaces work well with wax melt burners that have higher bulb wattages from 40 watts upwards.
It is worth considering that with the higher wattages’ burners will mean that the wax melts won’t last as long.
This is because the wax melts have been heated faster, which in turn will break down the fragrance much faster, meaning that the wax melts will have a shorter life span.
The great thing about Wax Melts is that they are inexpensive, so it doesn’t cost a fortune to purchase a couple of melts at once.
This will mean that whilst you might need to use more wax melts to fill the room with beautiful aromas, it won’t cost a fortune to make the room smell gorgeous with the best wax melts.
It is worth considering using two wax melt burners in large rooms so that you get the beautiful scent throws that you want in your room. It is worth putting them at the opposite ends so that they can both start and fill each side of the room up at the same time.
You will also find that some fragrances will provide a better scent throw when the wax is hotter than usual, for example using a 35-watt electric wax melt burner than a 15-watt wax melt burner.
It might take time to experiment in deciding how you get the best results by using wax burners, but it will be worth it to get the best wax melts!
Where to place your Wax Burner to get the Best Wax Melts?
Heat rises up and so does the scent. This is why we recommend placing your wax melt burner at a low to medium level so that you get the best out of your wax melts.
Air is never still and the humidity in the air traps the odour molecules which makes them become airborne much quicker travel further and linger for longer.
Interestingly our noses also operate at optimal level when the temperature is warmer and humidified, as it is similar to what our body temperature would be (Dr. Dalton).
On tables, mantel pieces, chest height shelves are great places to put your wax melt burner so that you get the best wax melts possible. Again, please use safely and keep out of the way of children, pets and any loose objects that could cause fire risk.
Open Windows
Whilst we need a current to carry our aroma (odour) particles its best not to leave the windows wide open.
This is because your beautiful aromas will be lost to the world and the odour particles will become much more diffused in the room, meaning that the aromas in the room will be very weak and you will certainly not get the best out of your wax melts.
Open Doors and High Ceilings
Again by having open doors or high ceilings means that the molecules have further to travel and as they do, they become more diffused meaning that the aromas aren’t as strong, as they have further to travel.
As above if you live in an open planned space or have your doors open, it could be worth considering a higher wattage wax melt burner or having multiple wax melt burners to get the best wax melts.
Don’t place your wax burner within an enclosed spaces such as a window or bookshelf, as this makes the molecules more confined and which won’t allow the fragrance to disperse in an effective way to make your home smell lovely.
Try placing your wax melt burner in various safe places in your room to find what works best for you to get the best wax melts.
Wax Melt Burner Maintenance
Best Wax Melts
Wax melt burner maintenance is essential to your safety and for getting the best wax melts. It is important to ensure that you are doing regular safety check on your burners to ensure that they are safe to use.
What do you need to be looking out for? Hairline cracks as these could lead to some nasty cracks or breaks in your wax melt burner. Should your wax melt burner experience any type of crack it is vital that you replace it straight away.
When using your wax melt burner ensure that that you place it on a flat, non-slip surface that is heat resistant. Its import ant to ensure that the surface is heat resistant as you will be placing your burner on it which will warm up/be hot.
Oil Burners and Wax Melt Burners, what is the difference?
Oil burners are different to wax melt burners because their dish is much closer to the heat source. This means that’s the dish gets hotter much faster, which will result in your wax melts melting faster and wont last for as long. So how can you tell the difference between a wax melt burner and an Oil burner?
A Wax Melt Burner should measure 10 cm from the tealight to the well/dish of burner. Essentially Wax melt burners have more space between the heat source and the dish. If you use an oil burner it can cause the wax to melt too rapidly and even heat the fragrance to a dangerous level. It means that it can burn off the fragrance and you won’t be able to smell it all.
How long can you leave your Wax Melt Burner on for?
If you leave your wax melt burner on 24/7 then you are very likely to become accustomed to the wax melt aromas.
This is because your nervous system has become progressively less sensitive to stimuli the longer its around. This enables the nervous system to concentrate on the newest sensations which could be a threat or opportunity.
Do you notice that when you come home from work that you don’t usually notice the smell of your home? Yet when you come back from holiday the house your house smells strange?! This is your nervous system working.
This is why it is important not to leave your wax melts on 24/7 alongside the safety concerns. This is another great reason to try various wax melts so that you don’t become too accustomed to their smells, switch it up after every bar! This way you will get the best wax melts possible.

At Soapfullness we just use natural waxes with a strong preference for Soy Wax. All our wax melts are cured for at least 2 weeks before sending out.
During this time, it allows the fragrance oils to bind to the wax and create the best aromas possible.

Trying to mask a Bad Smell?
Best Wax Melts
It just doesn’t work. If you are trying to mask a smell such as a bad aromas from the kitchen bin or a damp smell, wax melts simply aren’t the answer.
Wax Melts do a great job at lifting the ambiance of any room and gentle wrapping it in their beautiful aromas but they certainly don’t and won’t override any bad smells.
Yes, they may temporally make things smell a tad nicer but you need to source and treat the route cause of the bad odour!
Equally mixing difference wax melt fragrances together just doesn’t work in our opinion. Wax melts have been carefully crafted to smell amazing, by mixing them with other fragrances just takes away their specialty and we really wouldn’t recommend it.
Storing Wax Melts
Best Wax Melts
To get the best wax melts it’s important that you know how to store them. Why? Because how they are stored affects their shelf life, scent throw and their overall character.
To get the best wax melts you will want to store them in a cool dark place.
Refrain from exposing your melts to direct sunlight or keep near a heat source as this will affect the quality of the soy wax melts and cause them to deteriorate in quality and scent throw.
Always remember to use your older wax melts first so that you get the best wax melts possible in terms of longevity and scent throw.
Getting Wax out of a Wax Melt Burner
You will read on many wax melts fanatics blogs to pop the wax melt burner in the freezer for ten minutes and the wax will just pop out of the dish. Easy Peasy.
The thing that hasn’t been taken into consideration is the fact that wax melt burners are not made for putting in the freezer!
It is very likely that it will shorten the lifespan of the wax melt burner by causing hairline fractures, which then makes it very unsafe to use and will immediately need replacing.
Instead you have a number of options:
Heat the wax up so that its warm (not hot) then:
Pour it into a bag to dispose of.
Pour it into kitchen roll to absorb
Use Cotton Balls (around 3) to absorb the wax
Use a spoon to dig out (be gentle not to scratch the dish!)
Remember to wash your wax melt burner before using new wax melts. Soak the wax melt burner on its own in hot soapy water and ensure that you have a separate sponge/cloth to wipe it with to stop any contamination from the fragrance oils into your kitchen/plates/cutlery etc.
